Pavement plan hits a hurdle

A SCHEME to improve the raised high pavements in Melksham has hit a hurdle.

Highways engineers working for Mouchel, who are planning the work, came across technical difficulties when evaluating the raised pavements in Bank Street, which could not be resolved within the set timeframe.

The town council has agreed the scheme should be altered to widen the pavements on the east side of Bank Street instead.

The work, which is partly funded by money from Sainsbury's in return for planning permission for its Bath Road store, will also see improvements made to the pedestrian crossing in Church Walk and the pedestrian island at the Lowbourne junction and will last for about eight to 10 weeks starting in June.

The work had to be completed by the summer or else the £60,000 donated by Sainsbury's would have to be handed back as part of a legal agreement, plus £15,000 worth of accrued interest.

What does "The work had to be completed by the summer " mean? The start? Midsummer's Day? Sounds bloody vague for a legal agreement!

This project has been knocking around for years, I bet Clarkie can't believe all how long his initiative has taken and it's still not resolved. It reminds me of the old joke, 'how many engineers does it take to change a light bulb'? just get on with it.

A waste of money...

As for the terms of the agreement, I think you should be pointing the finger at sloppy reporting, not the CC in this case (although I am not normally their defender!)

All this cash being wasted on money grabbing contractors who have to 'assess' everything in triplicate.....when all that was initially needed was a good local engineering company to make some railings and a good local jobbing builder to install......job done...within budget...everybody happy......but no...local public servants have to ba**s everything up AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!!!!!

<BLUE SKY THINKING> This work could have been done while the road was closed earlier this year </BLUE SKY THINKING>

Once again someone is trying to paste the CC & their Engineers in a bad light......Mouchel said 2yrs ago that railings could not be installed within the available budget along the high pavement as it is, this is because the footway is actually slabs to basements and could not structurally take required handrail loading - or should I say the crowd loading on the handrails as would be expected on Carnival day. I personally don't believe the raised pavement is actually that high, if the flower shop did not insist on taking over the footway then there would be adequate width to comfortably pass, handrails would also restrict the shops for delivery access. Widening the other footway would not make life any safer and will only create new problems. WHY????? can't the Town Council spend the money on improving town facilities such as the drab, out of date, waste of time town park??????? Those who read the Melksham News might have noticed a few months ago, the pavement issue was front page advising the Town might loose the funds along with the £15k interest, page 2 advised that the Town was struggling to secure funding to improve the town park....rant over.. for now..

I agree with Mark wholeheartedly. Lets start coordinating road works. How many times have one lot of workmen finished up to I'm sure our collective relief, only to have things dug up again by some other contracter. Just after we had our brand new and lovely pavements redone, cable came along and put an unsightly trench down the middle. Where's the sense?? Somebody take control for crying out loud!!!

I remember Clarkie. I was having my hair cut one day when he looked out of the window half way thru, sniffed, threw down his tools and walked out of the shop. You what? 15 minutes later he comes back all casual like and starts sweeping up. Cmon man...what about me! Got out of there eventually, thank god.
