FORMER Olympic champion Jason Gardener visited students at Kingdown School in Warminster on Friday to relate his inspirational story, as part of their Personal Best Day.

‘Bath Bullet’ Gardener, who won gold as part of Great Britain’s 4x100m relay team at the Athens Games in 2004, talked about the problems he had to face and overcome, and the steps he took to achieve success.

Alongside the talk the whole school took part in a countries of the world quiz, searching for clues around the school and a traditional old-fashioned sports day, with egg-and-spoon races and a blindfold relay.

After the talk students wrote their own plans of the steps they would have to take to achieve their goals, and how they hope to overcome any problems they encounter on the way.

School games organiser Emily Reynolds said: “It was great to get an Olympic athlete along and he was absolutely brilliant, a great speaker.

“Normally we only have about one or two questions from the students but we had so many this time we had to cut every session short.

“He told about how he actually false started at the Athens Olympics when they won, and how he composed himself after that and went on to win.”

She said the idea of the Personal Best Day was to prepare the students for the Olympics next week and help them get the most out of it.

“They have been doing a huge amount this year connected with the event and we wanted something at the end of the year so they head off with it in mind,” she added.

“Hopefully they will take something away from the Olympics for the future.”
