RESIDENTS are celebrating the opening of the £2m Denton relief road which will direct heavy lorries away from their narrow village streets.
For many years residents living in Old Denton have campaigned against noisy lorries en route to Comma Oil's premises and Southern Water Services' wastewater treatment works.
So Project Denton, a collaboration between the South East Development Agency (SEDA), Kent County Council (KCC), Gravesham Council, Comma Oil and Southern Water, was formed to tackle the problem.
Denton Community Forum chairman and resident Liz Sharp said: "Project Denton has contributed to the revival of community spirit.
"Once the road is in operation, we can continue our road safety plans and enjoy the reduction in heavy traffic through our streets."
The work started in August 2002 funded by the Government, KCC, SEEDA and Gravesham Council.
Gravesham Council's head of planning and regeneration services Kevin Burbidge said: "It is a great day for the residents of Old Denton.
"Yet again the perseverance of the council and its partners has enabled us to deliver on the ground regardless of the difficulties encountered along the way."
