OFSTED inspectors described St Mary's Roman Catholic Junior School as a caring environment with good links to parents and the community but deemed one quarter of lessons unsatisfactory.
The OFSTED report was made after inspectors spent three and a half days at the school in May. Inspectors found special needs pupils were making good progress in the school, which has almost one fifth of its pupils registered as having special needs.
The inspectors also found year three pupils made good progress but stated there was room for improvement in standards in years four to six.
Head teacher Anne Pendry said: "I am delighted that the report recognises the many strengths and achievements of the school, particularly this year when we received the School Achievement Award for raising standards.
"I accept the judgements of the OFSTED team who highlighted areas for development already identified by the management team of the school."
