AN official ceremony to name the fourth Thames lifeboat, Spirit of the Thames is to take place next Saturday, June 7th at Teddington Lifeboat Station, at 2.30pm.

The special ceremony will name the D class lifeboat which has already responded to almost 100 emergency calls since going on station at the start of 2002.

The £20,000 cost of the boat was met out of various fundraising activities in the local area. Sue Clifton, regional manager for greater London said: "When the Teddington and Twickenham branch of the RNLI were asked to take over a flagging' D class lifeboat appeal they responded in an enthusiastic and positive fashion."

Spirit of the Thames is one of a number of lifeboats based at four RNLI stations along the Thames since January 2002. The D class boat was chosen for Teddington because of its greater manoeuvrability.
