Sutton pupils are now able to enjoy fast internet access as borough schools join Europe's most powerful computer network.

And as part of the London Grid for Learning (LGfL), school children now have a window on a variety of electronic teaching materials, including video and advanced graphics.

The service, which was officially launched last month, has been made possible by a collaboration of all 33 London boroughs.

Dr Ian Birnbaum, Sutton's strategic director for learning for life and a director of LGfL board, added: "The LGfL offers enormous potential to harness the power of new technology for learning at all levels and I am delighted Sutton is part of it."

Councillor Don Brims, lead councillor for information technology, said: "This is an exciting development and will support schools in raising standards. It is great news that Sutton is participating in the project with other London boroughs."

Brian Durrant, chief executive of the LGfL, said: "The benefits of the LGfL will be enormous and this is only the beginning.

"It is largely thanks to the effective way all London's local education authorities have come together to work on this unique project that it will make such a remarkable difference to education in the capital's schools."
