Elena Baltacha says she is not putting herself under pressure as she prepares to carry the hopes of Enfield into next week's Wimbledon tennis championships.

The 19-year-old, based at Winchmore Hill's Hazelwood Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, is bidding to get her tennis career back on track after recovering from liver damage caused by heavy doses of antibiotics used to treat tonsillitis.

Baltacha reached the third round of Wimbledon last year, after beating the seeded Amanda Coetzer. She then went on to win two tournaments in Felixstowe and Pamplona.

Ahead of the All-England Club championships, she said: "It has been a difficult year with my health problems and they still need to do some more tests. But I am not doing myself anymore damage by playing tennis.

"The training is going very well. Obviously I would have liked to have practiced a lot more before Wimbledon, but I'm hopeful I can do well. However, I'm not putting myself under pressure."

Baltacha has been hailed as the best British prospect since Jo Durie in the 1980s, and she admitted the attention following her Wimbledon performance was a little unexpected.

"It was unbelievable from not being recognised to everybody wanting to know everything about me and it was a bit of a shock. but it was such a great experience.

"I learnt so much about myself at Wimbledon it was a fantastic two weeks."

The Kiev-born star will face former semi-finalist Jelena Dokic in the first round on Monday (June 23), but one player stands out. "Serena Williams is the one to beat. She is so strong and it will be really difficult for anyone to beat her," she said.
