THE area off limits to people who swig back alcohol in certain Watford streets is set to be expanded.

A booze-free zone already exists in much of Central ward and some of Vicarage ward.

Watford Council will consider plans to extend the ban to other parts of the town at a licensing committee meeting on Monday, June 9.

Under the changes, police will be able to arrest drinkers who refuse to hand over their bottles or cans when asked.

Failure to comply could also lead to a possible £500 fine.

It is hoped the measures will cut down on anti-social behaviour and has been backed by residents, police and community representatives.

The areas under consideration are Queen's Road and Woodford Road to cover groups of pub-goers making their way home via Watford Junction.

Other areas where people would be forced to surrender drinks include Rickmansworth Road, Bowling Court, Park Avenue, Durban Road West, Southsea Avenue, Burton Avenue and parts of

Whippendell Road and Harwood Road.
