A MUM who has been unable to talk to her autistic son for five years has appealed to News Shopper readers to help pay for a revolutionary treatment.

Christiana Broderick, of Chilham Road, Mottingham, has a nine-year-old son, Robin Jones, who was diagnosed as autistic five years ago.

Since meeting Orpington-based autistic expert Florica Cowie, Robin has made significant progress on her `Hope TLC' program. But Christiana needs £10,000 to continue it.

Autism is a little understood condition. Some experts believe it has a genetic cause; others believe that brain damage may be at the root of it.

Typically, a child will not speak and will not be able to form relationships. He may develop `gaze avoidance' and have obsessive habits, such as the way his food is prepared.

Despite attending the Radlett Lodge special school in Hertfordshire since 1997, Robin's progress disappointed his mother. She said: "I wanted so much to hear my son talk to me. But that did not happen."

In November last year, Christiana took Robin to see Florica at her home in Station Road, Orpington. Florica's methods are based around creating a safe and simple environment which encourages children to develop mutual trust and respect with play volunteers. Christiana now needs £10,000 to transform her son's bedroom into a playroom. She also needs fun and energetic volunteers to play with Robin. If you think you can help, call Christiana on 0181 289 1006.
