HIGH street shoppers fled in terror when a robbery getaway car mounted the pavement with a staff member pinned to its bonnet.

The James Bond-style escapade began when Lewins Jewellers in Orpington High Street was robbed of £2,000 worth of gold.

Brave assistant manager Trevor Spears gave chase after a youth snatched a tray of men's bracelets from him.

The thief and his accomplice, who was waiting outside the shop, jumped into a Vauxhall Cavalier and a third man drove them away.

Mr Spears grabbed on to the wing mirror and was left hanging off the bonnet as the car sped down a dead-end alley by the post office.

A van then turned into the alley briefly trapping the getaway car.

Postman Colin O'Conner saw what happened. He said: "The car flew up the side alley, saw it was a dead-end and slammed into reverse. It hit the post van, then drove up onto the pavement, scattering shoppers everywhere. There was a guy from the jewellery shop on the bonnet."

Mr Spears, from Canon Road, Bromley, said: "I was holding onto the passenger wing mirror which I removed. There was no way for the car to get back out so it went up the pavement, scattering the shoppers everywhere before it sped down to the one way system."

A shaken Mr Spears, who is in his mid-40s, had to have stitches to his hand after the robbery at 4.05pm on Tuesday, last week.

Three white men, all wearing baseball caps were involved. The Cavalier was later recovered at Crockham Hill, Swanley. Police are interviewing a 22-year-old man.
