A SPECIAL NEEDS playgroup celebrates 30 years this year.

The Petts Wood Playgroup was set up to cater for special needs children from around Orpington after church-goers in the 1960s recognised the need for a separate scheme.

Now 30 years on, the group, based at the United Reformed Church, Willett Way, is still thriving.

The special year was marked by a party with the latest generation of under-fives at the successful group.

The children celebrated with balloons and a cake.

Run by dedicated volunteers, the group has grown from nine children to 25.

Secretary Jackie Duke said: "It's the unflagging interest, energy and patience of volunteers which has been the key to the playgroup's success."

The special year was given a further boost by sparkling OFSTED report which read: "The playgroup continues to flourish with dedicated, committed leadership and a supportive, consistent, caring volunteer team with a general ambience of enjoyment."

The playgroup relies on charitable contributions and welcomes any help. Call 01689 872053.
