CHISLEHURST police station is up for sale and residents are being asked to make an offer.

The Chislehurst Society is calling on residents to band together to buy the building which police plan to sell by the end of the year.

At the society's AGM last Thursday, nearly all those who attended agreed with the decision to look into launching a campaign to buy the station.

The idea has even got the thumbs-up from Chief Supt Gerry Howlett who said he would welcome the purchase and the possibility of police renting space.

Committee member Henson Davies has said: "We are going to get our heads together and work out some sort of action on the purchase of the police station.

"The Chislehurst Society is not in a position to put in a bid for the building. But we might start a campaign to raise the necessary funds.

"It depends on research into what the building might cost.

"We realise that police would have to secure the best possible price for it - and how much the upkeep would be.

"But if it came to pass, the police station might be a marvellous community resource. It might be then that police could use the resources."

Chief Supt Howlett said there are two main issues to be considered with such a move: the building needs to be sold by the end of the year and the Metropolitan Police will be seeking top price.
