MILLENNIUM celebrations will take on a Jurassic theme, with a monster dinosaur picnic planned for the people of Bromley next summer.

The Ravensbourne Geological Society is organising the party, after hearing that it had been awarded more than £18,000 of National Lottery cash.

And the society is also planning to give every Bromley schoolchild a unique gift of a piece of 200 million-year-old rock.

Austin Lockwood, of the society, said: "We're delighted about the award. The dinosaur picnic will be one of just a few fun days out for people during the Millennium year.

"We think children will love the rocks, as they're a lovely colour and all shiny - and the idea is to make them think about how old the earth really is."

Mr Lockwood said the society is planning to hand over the rocks at the Dinosaur Picnic, pencilled in for July 16 next year.

The event will be held among the massive dinosaur models at the Crystal Palace Park and will feature a variety of activities.
