MOTORISTS have called for action at a car park dubbed "dangerous" and a "thieves paradise" by users.

Drivers, who use Orpington's Station Road multi-storey car park, have slammed the council for failing to act on their complaints.

The protests come after a 25-year-old motorist was threatened with a screwdriver by a teenager trying to break into a car last Wednesday just before 9am.

The man confronted two teenagers on the sixth floor and one of them pulled out a screwdriver and lunged at him.

Fortunately, the weapon glanced off the man's briefcase and the victim then fled.

Angela Wilson of SPL, a publishing firm in Orpington, said: "Numerous cars have been vandalised and it has become quite dangerous. Every week there is an incident involving a car from our firm. Some have been taken and burnt out.

"Groups of teenagers, aged around 16, are creating havoc and it tends to pick up around holiday time. The council is ignoring our protests."

The bottom four floors of the car park have CCTV and are open to the public, but the top floors of the six-storey car park are rented to private firms.

A Bromley council spokesman said the council is prepared to extend CCTV up to the fifth and sixth floors with financial co-operation from those private firms.

He said: "There has been a reduction in crime in the car park since last August when CCTV came into operation.

"The fifth and sixth floors do have security officers who are paid by the firms."

Managing director of SPL Clive Foskett said: "Female members of staff are frightened they will be attacked in the car park.

"The council should be worried about crime on their doorstep, not what floor crimes are being committed on. That is totally irresponsible of them.

"They should be committed to making sure that undesirables are not loitering around the car park."

Police are appealing for witnesses to last Wednesday's attack.

The first suspect is described as a white male aged around 16 with dark brown hair. He is 5ft 7ins and was wearing a red and blue shell jacket, blue jeans and dirty white trainers.
