Purley John Fisher 21
Old Walcountians 24
Old Walcountians ended the 2002/03 season on a high note with a well-deserved, if narrow, victory at local rivals Purley John Fisher.
For most of the match, Walcountians were under pressure from a more powerful pack. And forward pressure put Purley in front after 13 minutes through a rolling maul try.
But Walcountians made better use of possession and broke quickly, with the half-back partnership of Ben Pusey and Andrew Boivin prominent in prompting many of the breaks. Boivin created the levelling try after 22 minutes for Chris Drinkwater.
Walcountians took the lead in the 29th minute, which Purley narrowed with a penalty before half-time. But the Old Boys struck again in the opening minute of the second half. Purley rallied with a penalty, followed by a try but sharp thinking by Houlihan led to Walcountians fourth try of the day when he pounced on a poor defensive pass and scored.
Purley scored in the 34th minute, but Walcountians held on for victory.
