Tottenham boss Glenn Hoddle believes his side are still capable of making it into Europe after seeing them overcome Birmingham City courtesy of a late Gus Poyet winner on Saturday.

The Uruguyan hit a stunning left-foot volley two minutes from time at White Hart Lane to rescue all three points and push the Lillywhites up to eighth place, until Blackburn's win at Fulham on Monday saw the slip to ninth.

Speaking after the game, Hoddle said: "Europe hasn't been out of our minds because the most consistent thing about this league is the inconsistent results.

"Everyone can beat everybody else.

"It's no good us winning today and not going on a bit of a run.

"We are now eighth in the league so who knows?

"Whether we're going to get in there or not depends on what sort of run we go on now after stopping the bleeding, as it were."

Saturday's match saw a welcome return to goalscoring form for striker Robbie Keane after he ran from behind Andy Marriott to poach the cheekiest goal of the season.

Hoddle was full of praise for the young Irishman, who had to contend with the death of his father the previous week.

He added: "It's good for him because sometimes football is a release from something like that and I'm sure he's enjoyed the goal and he'll remember it for a very long time.

"It was a unique goal. You don't see many like that.

"He's tried it a few times and as the saying goes 'he who persists...'. To do what he's done for us and for Ireland shows what a strong character he is."
