June 19, 2001 9:52: A FORMER soldier from Bromley celebrated an armour-plated 70th birthday with the help of world-famous military event organisers.

George Walker, of Madeira Drive, who served as a tank driver, gunner and wireless operator as a National Serviceman from 1949 to 1951, got a ride on a war jeep at a recent rehearsal for the War and Peace Show in Paddock Wood, near West Malling.

He also got to ride on an ex-British Army Abbott self-propelled gun, which weighed 17 tonnes at the Hop Farm Country Park.

War and Peace Show Organiser for Invicta Military Vehicle Preservation Society Rex Cadman said: "The show is always very popular with families and forces veterans.

"So we were delighted to be able to lay on something a little special for Mr Walker during our rehearsal."

The War and Peace Show, which features more than 3,000 military vehicles, is being held from July 18 to 22. For details or tickets, call 01622 872068.
