A school in South Norwood for teenagers with special needs has just received national recognition for developing the arts.

Priory Special Needs School, on Tennison Road, South Norwood, has just been awarded the Arts Council of England's "Arts Mark Award" gold standard, for using and developing art, dance, drama and music.

One of just 152 schools nationwide to have achieved the gold standard, it is especially remarkable for a secondary school for students aged 12-19 with severe learning difficulties and autism.

Head teacher Margaret Simpson said: "This award means we have achieved an amazing amount in terms of the arts, dance and music. It's a fantastic achievement for the students and staff."

Last week was the school's first art week, where students got involved in dance, drama and art workshops, before performing what they had learned in front of the school.

Mrs Simpson said: "The whole development of the arts in the school has enabled our students with learning difficulties to appreciate the arts and enjoy art galleries in London and Dulwich.

"With certain students, involvement has made them much more confident young adults."
