The dispute over the future over the Millennium dome should be resolved soon, Mayor Ken Livingstone said today.

The Mayor has objected to plans to develop the Dome site in Greenwich, as he wants them to include more housing for lower paid workers.

Discussions between the site developers and the mayor's office were continuing and were close to a conclusion, he said.

"There has been a lot of intense haggling going on," he said.

The ill-fated Dome closed two years after being opened to the public, and is costing millions of dollars in upkeep, while authorities decide what to do with the east London site.

Greenwich Council's planning committee has been examining a proposal from Meridian Delta, which would build a 20,000 seat concert and sports arena, with 10,000 homes, including 3,500 for key workers, nearby.

The Mayor's objection to this signaled a major obstacle to the development, but this may now be soon removed.
