TWO eagle-eyed youngsters have uncovered lost pieces of ancient Lake District history, reports Beth Broomby.
A rare Iron Age sword and a 13th Century silver coin now look set to be preserved and displayed at Kendal Museum thanks to the efforts of Jamie Stewardson, 11, from Hawkshead and Hayley Ewan, six, from Milnthorpe.
The school children, who did not previously know one another, both struck gold when they made separate archaeological finds during their summer holidays.
Jamie caught sight of the iron-age sword when he was playing in a field near Outgate and Hayley spied the small silver coin when she was with her parents in a wood near Levens.
There are only four known Iron Age swords in the whole of the North West and, while the silver short cross penny from the reign of King John is not a rare coin, it is an unusual find for this area.
The double discovery has amazed local historians.
