POLICE have defended a decision to give a Trowbridge pub an award after it was slammed in January for running a cut-price booze sale.
Wiltshire Police divisional commander Julian Kirby presented the Responsible Organisation in the Community Awards (ROC) to the Sir Isaac Pitman pub in Market Place on Tuesday evening.
At the beginning of the year Trowbridge police spoke out against the pub for cutting the price of a number of drinks, including gin and tonic, to just 99p, in what it billed a January sale.
Although not illegal, police warned they would be monitoring the situation closely and would take action if necessary.
This week, the pub was one of eight listed by police for the ROC award at a special ceremony held at divisional headquarters in Melksham.
The others were The John Barleycorn, in Warminster, The Black Horse in Chippenham, The Foresters Arms in Melksham, The Town and Neeld Hall in Chippenham, The Corn Exchange in Devizes, Pizzaria in Wootton Bassett and The West End Inn in Melksham.

To qualify for the award the pubs had to satisfy four licensing objectives including the prevention of crime and disorder, promotion of public safety, the prevention of public nuisance and the protection of children from harm.
In a statement about the awards, Wiltshire Police said: "ROC aims to go further than simply to be an award. It aims to ensure that licensed premises are not just meeting the requirements of their licences, but that they are actively promoting the four licensing objectives."
Speaking after the ceremony, Jacqui Gallimore, divisional licensing officer based at Melksham, said: "The Sir Isaac Pitman was selected for the award before the drinks promotion was introduced.
"Premises which step up to the mark and are prepared to be scrutinised and, where necessary make improvements, demonstrate a real commitment to our common goal of achieving safer communities.
"There were no adverse affects that we know of from the drinks promotion and it appears to have been run responsibly.
"I am proud of the achievements of the premises which have received their award."

So, The Isaac Pitman offers cut price drinks AND still manages to keep things under control ? Then they deserve an award. There are plenty of other places who can't keep a lid on things even without drinks promotions. Well Done I say.

Why does there never seem to be a fuss about the cut-price drinks available at supermarkets? Go out on Friday/Saturday night and see how many are drinking from bottles on the way to the pub. Leave those of us who can drink responsibly, at the pub, alone - it's already TOO EXPENSIVE to get drunk in the pub.

Another piece of sh1t stirring by WT. On the rare occasions that I have a drink in Trowbridge I have used this pub' and never seen any trouble at all so the management must be doing something right. Good luck to them.

i have to agree the WT is getting so petty to try to make stories news. Theer is nothing worth reading it it at the moment. About time the reporters got off their backsides and did some proper investigative work.
