£2k gift boosts church garden revamp
Chapel trustees chairman Phil Howard and steward Victoria Coombes with plans to revamp the chapel gardens
Chapel trustees chairman Phil Howard and steward Victoria Coombes with plans to revamp the chapel gardens

A GENEROUS cash donation bequeathed to Warminster has helped rebuild a church garden.

A gift of £2,000 from the late Majorie and Roderick McAdams, a brother and sister from Ash Walk, Warminster, was donated to Warminster Town Council to improve flower displays in the town.

Two years on and the money has been handed over to the Chapel Of St Lawrence in the High Street, who are using it to build a new garden and install a memorial plaque.

Warminster town clerk Heather Abernethie said: "The money came to us for flower displays and we wanted to do something with it that would have a lasting impact.

"I know the church wanted things updating and it was a nice way to do it with a plaque and something that is prolonged and not just seasonal."

Mr McAdams was a teacher at Warminster School.

The chapel is run by the Feoffees of the Chapel of St Lawrence, who act as trustees responsible for the upkeep and preservation of the chapel.

Victoria Coombs, of Bishopstrow, is the clerk for the Feoffees of the Chapel of St Lawrence.

She said: "I think it will make a lot of difference. The chapel is right in the centre of town.

"A lot of people walk past it when doing their shopping. I think the town is very lucky to have the chapel."

A new bed for shrubs will be created on the eastern boundary and a new flowerbed will be dug under the smaller of the two trees.

The existing shrub border beside the porch will be restocked and beds under the trees will continue to be planted with flowers.

Phil Howard, chairman of the Feoffees, is delighted with the opportunity to upgrade the area.

He said: "We are grateful to the McAdams and our town council for making this money available to the chapel. We look forward to seeing the improvements on this site which we hope will be enjoyed by all passers by."

The lavender hedge that bordered the pathway has already been removed and it is planned to remove an existing square flowerbed.

Once this work has been completed the open grass area will be re-turfed.
