YOU would be forgiven for thinking the military in Warminster was marking a death as the Last Post rang out across Parade Square at Battlesbury Barracks yesterday.

But this was not a memorial, but the end of an era as The Duke of Wellington's Regiment, or 'The Dukes', changed its name to the 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment.

The move comes as part of the government's Future Infantry Structure, which is itself part of a bigger shake up of the organisation of the armed forces called Future Army Structure.

Troops marched out onto Parade Square and were ordered to remove their caps with The Dukes badge on them as the old regimental flag was lowered to the sound of the Last Post.

They then put on their new caps with The Yorkshire Regimental badge emblazoned on them as the new flag was raised to the tune of the Reveille played by bugler, Corporal 'Big Ox' Oxley.

Lieutenant General Nick Houghton CBE, himself a former member of the Green Howards, said: "It would be easy to be sad, to allow the emotion of what's passing into history to outshine the opportunity of the future, but I do not see it that way."

He praised The Dukes for their past but emphasised this was an opportunity for the future. The name of the new regiment reflects the fact the majority of soldiers recruited into the regiment come from Yorkshire.
