WESTBURY residents are being urged to take advantage of a free pet neutering scheme which could stop thousands of unwanted animals being born.
The RSPCA Mid Wiltshire branch is launching the scheme in the town this month, with the aim of reducing the number of unwanted pets in the area, especially cats.
According to Inspector Nicki Cooke, who covers the area, Westbury has a significant problem with unplanned breeding of dogs, cats and rabbits.

She said: "What people don't seem to realise is just how quickly and from what an early age animals can breed.
"I have seen examples in the area of one family struggling to cope with numerous rabbits, and others that were overrun with kittens - and these are not isolated incidents."
The service will be available to all pet owners and will run until allocated funds have been exhausted.
Nicki added: "Everyday the RSPCA deals with unwanted animals and litters that have been abandoned, dumped by roadsides and in woodlands, because their owners are unable to cope with them.
"But this situation is easily remedied; if only more pet owners would do the responsible thing and get their pet neutered."
Barbara Myers, Mid Wiltshire branch spokesman, added: "We are keen to target as many pets as possible but, as a local charity, we only have a limited budget, so it will be a matter of first come first served, until the funds run out."
Anyone interested in taking advantage of these offers is asked to contact Alison Rainbow at Harris Hill and Gibbons on 01373 823546 for further details.
