Events celebrates youth achievements

A PREMIERE event for Wiltshire young people celebrating their projects from the past year is taking place tonight.

More than 500 young people from across the county are gathering to attend 'WYPOF on Ice' at Club Ice in Westbury.

The event will be a celebration of all the projects which have been funded by the Wiltshire Young People's Opportunity Fund (WYPOF) over the last year and to promote the fund for the coming year.

WYPOF funding has been provided by the Government's Department for Children, Schools and Families and has been administered in Wiltshire by young people and Wiltshire County Council.

In the past year in excess of £215,000 has been given to various projects and events for young people, with an additional £180,000 being granted to capital works for young people.

Every WYPOF application has to be written by young people and all the applications are assessed by a panel of trained young people from Wiltshire Assembly of Youth.

At the ceremony, eight of the most outstanding projects supported by funding from the WYPOF will use a range of presentations such as film and drama to show how their projects helped young people.

Each of the eight outstanding projects will receive a certificate presented by young people on the WYPOF judging panel.

Dignitaries and decision makers from across Wiltshire will be there to help the young people celebrate their success.

David Whewell, head of Wiltshire County Council's youth development service, said: "Young people have consistently proven they are able to develop new and interesting programmes and projects for themselves and their peers.

"There are more things to do and places for young people to go in Wiltshire due to WYPOF funding and young people's efforts."
