WHEN readers were invited for their comments on a new sculpture for the Royal United Hospital in Bath, it wasn't surprising that the pithy comments printed in last week's Wiltshire Times reflect the total misunderstanding by ignorant people who lack any aesthetic judgement, or indeed any comprehension that the arts or things of beauty may contribute to the wellbeing of the spirit.
There are many instances where the arts are proving to be an integral part within healthcare - a glowing example is at Salisbury Hospital, where Artcare organise regular exhibitions of work and invite local artists and staff and patients to participate in workshops. Many artists across the South West contribute their time and expertise within health situations, so instead of saying forget the poxy statues sod the art and don't waste money on art' it's time to think again on how useful art can be to promote health issues and offer some cultural time out. Broaden your outlook and look at the bigger picture.
