IN response to your recent article on Street Litter Control Notices in Melksham: the press release you were sent emphasised how these measures were not meant to be draconian, and would only be applied after all other avenues had been exhausted.
It was made clear that environmental enforcement officers seek to work with local retailers and outlined the circumstances under which a notice would be issued.
Your article goes on to quote a trader in Melksham and uses the example of somebody urinating in his letterbox as a reason to suggest that such notices are ineffective. If your reporter had read the press release fully they would have realised that this is not something that Street Litter Control Notices are meant to combat.

I understand that you use press releases as a basis around which to write a story. However, in this instance, it was edited in such a way as to lose both the message and the factual content.
Not every story is controversial. This is a measure that is doubtless well received by most people in Melksham. It is aimed at cleaning up the town and promoting community spirit. It is unfortunate that a decision was taken to slant the story so that this positive news was lost. If you wish to put a more controversial spin onto a story in future, you should ensure that you get the facts right.
