SMOKERS in the south west are being urged to quit for good by NHS campaign The Big Quit.

New research shows that one in ten smokers claim to have quit and over half of south west smokers have thought about quitting since the nationwide ban was introduced on July 1.

Quitting smoking is not easy and in response to those that did quit but started smoking again, the NHS Smokefree campaign has joined forces with commercial radio.

Among others, Atlantic FM in Cornwall, Original FM in Bristol, and Orchard FM in Taunton and Yeovil have launched a nationwide campaign encouraging people to quit smoking for good.

Radio stations across the south west are encouraging listeners to sign up to The Big Quit and quit smoking across the region.

Website www.thebigquit.co.uk also offers access to tips and information on local NHS Stop Smoking Services.

Those wanting to quit can call the NHS Smoking helpline on 0800 1699169 where they will find a range of free support.

Am I alone in being confused totally by this (it doesn't make sense grammatically)? I will eat my hat if 10 % of smokers have stopped smoking since ban. Perhaps another way of expressing the results of this 'research' would be to say that 10 % of smokers claimed to have stopped smoking but hadn't.

Even if 10 per cent had succeeded that's a bit dismal when 70 per cent were reported as wanting to give up ...

Or if 10 per cent of smokers have stopped against a 7 per cent drop in smoking, that means that the remaining smokers are smoking more than before. None of this is very surprising.

7 per cent drop in tobacco sales, I meant to say.

This isn't necessarily regarding the smoking ban, but I am sick to death of hearing/reading so called "news" reports that state: "Studies show, Research shows" and nothing to back up those claims.

If a news report stated that studies show that hanging by your thumb for an hour a day is benificial for your health or research shows that the moon is made of cheese, the vast majority of the public accept it as the gospel truth.

When are people going to wake up and start questioning these types of stories and start making decisions for themselves?

How many more silly Nanny Laws can we stand? I agree with informing people but after that its up to people to make up their own minds.

Community England under Brown is going to have so much legislation and so little justice for real crime to be tackled that we will have to lock up the nanny state "criminal" and let all the evil doers out to make room for ordinary people!

NEW LABOUR - NEW NANNY STATE! Its all for the community of course so that will make it OK.

The smoking ban has already failed. Why on earth are these rediculous figures being published. We saw exactly the same statements from Ireland but as we see from the official OTC figures, smoking has increased especially among the young.
Stop this pure propaganda that is worthy of a Goebbels but has nothing to do with reality.

To be quite honest, who cares whether smoking has increased or not as long those that do it do so in their own homes and not where non smokers have to suffer the stink smokers cause. Let smokers keep their cancer causing habit to themselves.

Yali, as I have mentioned before, it is not so much a habit, as a goverment sponsored addiction. Ok, maybe the tobacco companies arent allowed to advertise anymore, but the goverment of the day are more than happy to collect the tax imposed on tobacco sales. Be warned, next target is drink. The end of so called "happy hours" is in sight. When was the last time you saw a headline saying that someone who had smoked to many ciggies beat the living daylights out of someone for no reason? Get real. Drink is far more hazardous to the health, causes more trouble and results in more lost days at work than a few fags ever could.

Couldn`t agree with you more Modsod. As a non drinker, smoker bans on these habits will not affect me (or the missus) a jot. I wouldn`t wish to enforce my choices on anyone in the big picture but in public places I do like to go home not smelling like an ashtray or a whiskey glass. I am not a PC person by any means and like to see people having a good time as long as I do not have to suffer as a result of it. I hope you understand.

Yali - glad you are enjoying the pubs- but take care as most of them are now empty as the smokers are doing it at home now and there will be less willing to stnd in the rain throughout the winter you may not enjoy your local for long as it may just go bust! Where are all the non-smokers who said they would use the pubs if they are non-smoking eh - still whinging at home about something else perhaps?
