CHIPPENHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO PREVIEW: Crunch time for top four

THIS Sunday could prove to be a pivotal one for the top four sides at the top of the Division Two table.

Early leaders Staverton visit second-placed Somerford and third in the standings White Horse are scheduled to host Goatacre who are in fourth spot.

Staverton have an excellent record against Spike Chandler’s Somerford side, having won all four encounters and with Aaron Latchem’s side in great form at the moment they will be favourites to maintain the hoodoo they seem to have over their fellow villagers.

White Horse FC are quickly becoming the comeback kings as twice already this season they have snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat.

But Clive Black’s side will need to improve defensively if they are to be taken as serious title contenders as they can really on their forwards to outscore their opponents ever week.

Next up for White Horse are Goatacre CC, who go into their meeting at Leighton unbeaten in five, and with a very good defensive record that should make for a thrilling contest.

Jim Wilson had high hopes for his Kings Arms (All Cannings) side ahead of the new season, but things have not gone to plan for Wilson’s men who with just one win from their six matches are languishing in the bottom part of the table.

Kings Arms will have the welcome mat out for GRFC this Sunday where they will be hoping for a victory to kick start their season.

That may be harder than expected as GRFC have never lost to their hosts and will fancy their own chances of claiming a third win of the campaign.

Southwick Wanderers are another side who would have expected to have had a better start than they have.

Stuart Powell’s men are currently without out a point and are confined to the bottom two, but with the players they have signed on they should be better placed than they are.

Sutton Benger are next up for Wanderers and the game at Stanley Park, should go the way of the hosts, but with Wanderers having won at the same venue last term another upset as unlikely as it may seem is on the cards if the visitors could get their first choice XI to turn up.

Wren FC, currently with no points to their name, will be hoping for a change of fortunes when they host Miller Sports at Beversbrook this weekend.

Carl Murray’s side have only managed just one win in the last 23 games and that came against Miller back in April when they won 6-2.

The chances of that happening are slim but not impossible and this is one game that may just see Wren come good and open their account for the season.
