WILTSHIRE SUNDAY CUP PREVIEW: Jager start defence of Sunday Cup

ONE of the ties of the second round of the Wiltshire Sunday Cup has to be the all-Chippenham Sunday League affair featuring current holders FC Jage and  first division high-flyers Bradford Renegades.

Renegades have hit the ground running this season and are unbeaten at the top of division one.

Add to that the scintillating form of striker Sam Jordan and Renegades pose a real and dangerous threat to Jager's chances of progressing and defending their trophy.

Jager have started their first season in the Premier Division well and are currently in second place with their only loss coming at the hands of Biddestone Social.

Jager know they will have to be at their best to progress past a Renegades side full of goals but Renegades will also have to be wary that Jager are perhaps a step up from what they have already faced this season.

On paper, this game has goals written all over it but chances are, the two sides will cancel each other out and this could be a low scoring game, won by the odd goal.

AFC Melksham’s reward for their outstanding first round win over Swindon League outfit Wheatsheaf in the previous round was a home tie with fellow Chippenham League side FC North Wiltshire but on Wednesday, Melksham received the news that they will progress to the final 16 without having to kick a ball as their opponents have decided to withdraw from the competition.

FC Brunel squeezed past GRFC in round one and Adam O’Keeffe will take his Chippenham-based side to Fairford Town FC, for their showdown with Swindon League third division side AFC Tap & Barrel ,who will be looking to add Brunel to their list of league scalps having disposed of Corsham United in the last round.

The teams met in two pre-season friendlies which ended with one win apiece so they appear to be two evenly matched sides but recent league form points to a win for the hosts.

Premier division leaders Biddestone Social are due to welcome Frome & District Sunday league outfit Dilton Rovers to their Yatton Road base.

With Dan Lardner’s side looking for a good cup run they will be red hot favourites to maintain their cup challenge with what should be a convincing win over a side who currently lie second in division one of their respective league.

But the player Biddestone will have to keep a watch out for is former Blue Circle man Jamie Howse, who has 17 goals to his name in all competitions this term.

Third division table toppers FC Buscots will be hoping that they can take their league form with them when they host Swindon League division one side Rodbourne FC at Nurstead Road.

Buscots have won all six of their games to date while the Rods have managed just one win from six.

If Buscots are on form, they have a good chance of causing an upset, but if they have an off day then the visitors' trip back to Swindon should be a happy one.

Third division Fortune Inn have been paired at home to league newcomers Trowbridge Rangers, who come Sunday afternoon, may well be asking themselves why they ever entered the competition as Fortune, who beat Frome League side FC St George, in the last round should have eased into the final 16.

Penhill United, who are mid-table in the Swindon League first division, play host to Chippenham West End and in all probability they should have a safe passage into the third round.

However the West End, who have yet to lose a game this season, will be up for the fight and with their hosts not having the best of records in the Sunday Cup, the visitors could pull off a cup upset.
