HOCKEY: Wait goes on after late goal

WEST Wilts’ quest for their first point of the season goes on after they suffered late heartbreak against Truro last weekend.

Mark Brothers’ side looked to take advantage of their visitors’ long journey from Cornwall by exploding out of the blocks and putting Truro under pressure in the first half but this led to gaps opening in the Wilts defence.

Dan Sheppard and Jamie Batten both created chances but the hosts were unable to open the scoring and went into the break a goal behind.

After emerging from the break with renewed vigour, West Wilts levelled the scores through Callum Wolff but despite David King impressing in defence, he was unable to stop Truro going 2-1 ahead from a short corner.

Sheppard popped up with the equaliser for Brothers’ men and Wilts looked set for a share of the spoils before tired legs led to a deflected effort finding the net as Truro snatched a 3-2 victory in the closing stages.

West Wilts travel to fifth-placed University of Exeter C tomorrow.

West Wilts A notched up their second victory of the season in the Central Two division with a 5-1 triumph at Old Bristolians A.

Wilts were 2-0 up at the break thanks to goals from Dave Mantle and Dave Yalland.

Lewis Clayton and Gavin Cleverley netted before the hosts reduced the deficit but Mantle put the icing on the cake with his second.

Wilts second XI completed an unbeaten weekend with a 1-1 draw against Bristol University B.

The Uni took the lead early in the second half before Yalland shot home to level the scores and earn his side a point.

West Wilts E were beaten 5-0 at Team Bath Buccaneers G on Saturday.
