CHIPPENHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO: Goal difference puts Staverton on top

HAVING seen their main title Division Two title rivals Goatacre stretch their lead at the top of the table earlier in the day, Staverton knew that a victory at bottom of the table Wren FC would see them reclaim a share of pole position.

And they got the victory they were after their 8-2 triumph taking them top on goal difference.

Staverton’s manager Aaron Latchem was pleased with the showing of his forwards as all three got their name on the scoresheet.

Jason Povey put the villagers ahead, Zac Manna and Levi Wood made it 3-0 before Povey and Manna added to their earlier efforts to give the visitors to Beversbrook a 5-0 interval lead.

All three players were on target again in the second half, Wood doubling his tally to make it 6-0.

The race was on to see who could claim the first hat-trick and than honour fell to Povey, whose third of the afternoon took his tally for the season to 25 in all competitions. 

Wren pulled a goal back when Craig Garner scored from the penalty spot, but shortly after Manna wrapped up the second treble of the game when he put Staverton 8-1 up.

The final goal of the game went to Old Road’s Matt Fenn for whom it was his first of the season.

GOATACRE CC FC clung onto their share of top spot, but they were made to fight all the way by a gutsy Kings Arms (All Cannings) who played their part in a thriller and pushed their hosts all the way before suffering a 3-2 loss.

Goatacre, who won the reverse fixture 4-0, looked to be on course for another convincing win after goals from Rob Murphy and Mike Coulson had put them two up at the break.

And when Coulson scored from the penalty spot early in the second period to claim his second of the game and the cricketers’ third it should have been game over.

Kings Arms, who had lost just once in their previous eight games, showed real character as they fought their way back from 3-0 down, Jacob Rogers reducing the arrears within five minutes.

From then on they knocked on the door but couldn’t find a way through the hosts' defence until Josh Hunter scored their second two minutes from time.

Referee Julian Sattin heaped praise on both sides for the manner in which the game was played and the praise was reciprocated as both teams were impressed with Sattin’s handling of the game.

GRFC 1 Somerford FC 5

AFTER ending a four-match winless run last weekend, GRFC were hoping to claim a victory over their nemesis Somerford FC when the sides met at Sutton Benger.

But like the previous three meetings between the sides it was Somerford who maintained their hoodoo over their hosts as a 5-1 win saw them claim a fourth successive win over Tam Laidlaw’s side.

Goals from Lee Fernandez, Chris Yeo and Ashley Monaghan gave Somerford a comfortable half time advantage.

Jordan Tarrant reduced the arrears for GRFC but any thoughts of a comeback were short lived when Louis Gough restored Somerford’s three goal cushion.

Somerford killed off their hosts with their fifth of the game, Gough scoring his second of the morning to complete the 5-1 success.
