CHIPPENHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE DIVISION FOUR: Pig & Whistle edge Oakhill in 11-goal thriller

THE fixture at Kington Langley between Oakhill and Pig & Whistle United B may have been the only game in Division Four to have been played but it proved to be a classic as the teams fought out an 11-goal thriller which was won 6-5 by Pig & Whistle.

After a promising start to their first-ever league campaign a seven match winless run saw United plummet down the standings and although the victory won’t rekindle any promotion hopes the victory will give the visitors a massive boost for the remainder of the season.

Oakhill, who went into the game on the back of three defeats, played their part in a game that they were always chasing after goals from Jake and Dan Goldsworthy had put their guests 2-0 ahead.

A spirited comeback saw them come up just short as the fought to get something from a game that could so easily of matched the high scoring 4-4 draw that the teams had when they last met.

Will Birch reduced the arrears for Oakhill before a second from Jake Goldsworthy restored Pig & Whistle’s two-goal cushion.

Oakhill rallied again and halved the deficit through Tom Webb but as the game ebbed and flowed it was the visitors who netted the next goal, Dan Goldsworthy grabbing his second of the morning for 4-2.

There was still time before half time for another goal and Oakhill kept themselves in the game when Nick Alexander scored from the halfway line to claim his first of the season and keep his team within touching distance of Adrian Skinner’s side.

The next goal was always going to be important and it went the way of Pig & Whistle, who thanks to a hat-trick goal from Dan Goldsworthy opened up a 5-3 advantage.

Oakhill’s response was swift and the pulled a goal back through Dan Payne but they were unable to keep things tight at the back and Ben Johnson broke through to scored his first-ever goal for the club to put them 6-4 ahead.

With 10 minutes remaining Oakhill were thrown a lifeline, Pig & Whistle had keeper Lee Goodchild sent off and from the resulting penalty Tom Webb scored his second of the morning to give the hosts hope of snatching a point.

But even with their numerical advantage the hosts were unable to find a way through their guests defence for a sixth time as Pig & Whistle held out to claim a dramatic 6-5 success.
