Warminster’s first home match since late November proved an afternoon to forget as they were soundly beaten at Folly Lane.

The Amber and Blues welcomed back talismanic skipper Dave Coleman after an injury lay-off and started well with some early possession.

However, it was Wimborne who took the lead with a penalty.

Using their pacy wingers, Wimborne then added a converted try for a 10-0 lead.

The home side had a good 10-minute spell, Coleman leading from the front, but could not crack the defence and came away with just a Jason Sprangle penalty.

However, when they were penalised before half time, Wimborne kicked their own penalty to make it 15-3.

The second half followed in a similar vein as Wimborne scored a third try from a catch and drive.

Warminster fought back and winger Chris Douglas twice went close before they finally scored through number eight Dean Priestman, who went over from a close range scrum.

That was as good as it got for the hosts though, Wimborne adding two further tries before the end.

  • WEAKENED Westbury were made to pay as they crashed to a 50-5 defeat at Blandford.

Travelling with just 15 players due to last-minute drop-outs, their troubles were made worse when fly-half Simon Higgins was carried off with a knee injury after 10 minutes.

On a heavy pitch, the 14 players performed well, restricting Blandford to scores out wide using their extra man.

In the second half Westbury made inroads with some strong runs from the pack and centres Darren Fuller and Nathan Brown.

Fuller eventually powered over in the corner for a consolation try midway through the second half and Westbury almost got another when veteran scrum-half Bryan Clarke made a break, but just lacked the speed to reach the line.

Westbury host local rivals Warminster tomorrow (2.15pm).

  • BRADFORD remained in fourth place by inflicting a first defeat in 10 league matches on second-placed Pewsey Vale.

The visitors’ pack was dominant at both the scrum and lineout, scoring all three tries.

Number eight Ed Sawyer went over from two pushovers, with prop Dave Lamplough also scoring.
