CHIPPENHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO PREVIEW: Goatacre aware of banana skin

GOATACRE CC must have thought that their chance of winning the Division Two title had gone when they were beaten by Somerford.

However, last week's defeat for leaders Staverton away at the same side has opened the door for the cricketers, who know that they can’t afford to drop a single point from their remaining four fixtures, two of which are against Chippenham West End.

The points won’t arrive on a plate and Goatacre will have to work hard for anything they get from the game as West End could add another twist to the race for silverware by getting a point from the game.

Miller Sports find themselves in the bottom two, but Mike Stevens' side will be buoyed by last week's win over Wren FC and will be looking to pick up maximum points from the visit of GRFC to the Beeches.

Tam Laidlaw’s visitors to Shaw are on nine points with the Miller Boys so the game is massive for both teams as they try to preserve their second division status.

GRFC won the reverse fixture 3-2, but it is the hosts who are tipped to avenge that lost with a low scoring win.

Southwick Wanderers will lock horns with near-neighbours Staverton in what promises to be an intriguing contest that, on paper, should go the way of the latter, who won the earlier meeting of the sides 6-1.

However that may not be the case as Southwick are in a rich vein of form having won four on the spin with bragging rights at stake, Southwick will raise their game and an upset could be on the cards.

But it would be a huge shock if Aaron Latchem’s side didn’t pick up the two points to keep them top of the pile.

Having put themselves in the promotion race last weekend Somerford will want to build on the 2-1 win over leaders Staverton and, with a trip to struggling Sutton Benger, Spike Chandler’s side have the perfect opportunity to keep the pressure on the top two.

Benger, who are winless in five and who lost the reverse clash 2-1, will look to avenge February’s defeat will have to be at their very best if they are to stop the visitors to Stanley Park from extending their unbeaten run to seven games.

With just two matches remaining, bottom of the table Wren FC will have it all to do if they are to claim their first win of the season this weekend.

Next up for Carl Murray’s side are Clive Black’s promotion-chasing White Horse, who in their quest to reel in the top sides should have few problems in collecting maximum points, which would leave them needing to win their remaining six games to nick a top two placing.
