BOX reigned supreme in the latter stages of the Ladies Two Wood Singles Championship at Marlborough last Friday.

The duo of Alex Jacobs and Sue Dix safely negotiated the last eight and then the semi-finals to set up a club showdown and book a place in the county final at Salisbury on June 20.

Jacobs, a four-time winner of this event in 1995, 2002, 2008 and 2009 and runner-up in 1998 and Dix, who has never reached the county final before, also earned the right to represent Wiltshire at Royal Leamington Spa in the National Championships in the national two wood singles at the end of July.

Jacobs beat last year’s county champion Linda Perfitt (Westlecot) by seven shots in her quarter final before seeing off Ann Roberts-Phare (North Wilts) – a one-shot victor over teenager Lucy Smith (Wootton Bassett) – 15-9 in the last four.

Dix, a beaten quarter-finalist in 2012, edged home against Spencer Moulton’s Marcia Hartley 13-12 before defeating Glenda Hibberd (Wilton) – who had beaten Chippenham Town’s Irene Button – by three shots.

STRATTON Churchway and Amesbury qualified for the final in the county ladies national triples championships and booked their places at Royal Leamington Spa at the beginning of August.

The two teams will go on to the triples final at Salisbury on July 20 but also earned the right to represent Wiltshire. But there was no joy for the triples teams from Devizes, Box, Chippenham Town, Malmesbury and Highworth.

In the morning quarter-finals played at Wootton Bassett last Saturday the Devizes trio of Joyce Little, Wendy Gaisford and skip Marguerite Alexander edged home by two shots over Box triple Karen Funnell, Jean Collier and Carol Grenfell.

The other match in the bottom half of the draw saw Chippenham Town’s Barbara Land and teammates Viv Baskerville and Jan Boden have to give second best to a very experienced Stratton Churchway’s trio 16-11.

In the top half of the quarter-finals Marlene Aylward’s team from Malmesbury lost by eight shots to Amesbury while Highworth skipped by Linda Kingston also lost by eight shots to another triple from Amesbury.

Despite being 7-0 down at five ends in the semi-final against Stratton Churchway the Devizes trio skipped by Alexander had pulled back to 8-8 at ten. However, they then slipped 17-10 adrift at 15 ends and could only pick-up four shots on the last three ends to finish as 17-14 losers.

The other semi-final, an all-Amesbury affair, saw Joan Coleman triumph over Janice Rowe 23-18.

The attention now switches to the county ladies national pairs championship which gets under way in earnest this week.
