CRICKET: Corsham buzzing
9:20am Friday 16th August 2013 in Sport
CORSHAM captain Robin D’Souza says that his side are ‘buzzing’ after hauling themselves out of the Premier One relegation zone with a dramatic victory over Bridgwater last weekend.
D’Souza claimed the visitors’ last four wickets in just over seven overs to ensure that his side claimed a narrow two-run victory at Station Road.
Corsham now sit nine points clear of the drop zone and D’Souza thinks that his side have given their chances of survival a massive boost.
“We’ve been waiting for that one win for a while now and all of the boys are buzing after that – it’s really good for our confidence,” said the Station Road skipper.
“It was a pretty exciting game and I changed the whole batting order because they had a left-arm spinner from Somerset (George Dockrell), that a lot of the guys weren’t confident about facing.
“So I batted at number seven because I’m from the sub-continent and I’m used to that kind of thing – that was alongside Sam Collier, who batted really well.
“I’ve said to the boys that our last four games are like the knockout stages of a competition and that’s how we’ve got to treat it. We’re in to the quarter-finals now.”
Corsham opted to bat first after winning the toss and lost their first four wickets for just 22 runs before Collier made 64.
D’Souza weighed in with 26 while Ben Gardner hit 16.
Bridgwater’s Thomas Drake (3-40) and Chris Skidmore (3-21) turned the screw on Corsham, who ended their innings on 158-9.
Michael Coles led the visitors’ run chase with a knock of 52 whilst Jonathan Vickery (25) and Dockrell (20) did their best to add further impetus to the Bridgwater innings.
Ashur Morrison (2-18) and Tom Foley (2-13) both helped put pressure on the visitors before D’Souza’s late four-wicket haul ensured Bridwater were skittled for 156 in the final over, breathing new life in to Corsham’s battle against relegation.
