DIVISION One veterans Bromham (Sunday) entertained newly-promoted White Horse A at Jubilee Field and, despite only registering the two victories last term and suffering a heavy pre-season defeat against the same opponents a week earlier, the villagers got their new campaign off to winning ways in entertaining fashion.

They were made to do it the hard way though and fought back from 2-0 down to claim the three points with a workmanlike 3-2 victory.

The Westbury-based visitors started the brighter and took a 10th minute lead when Jack Miluk arrived late at the back post to bundle home debutant Marek Miszta’s cross.

The lead was doubled just ten minutes later when another new boy, Nick Mead, sent a raking ball out to Miluk who cut inside from the right flank and unselfishly squared for Dale Rowland to tap home.

At that point it seemed like there could only be one winner as the guests looked sharp, whilst the hosts created little of any real substance.

With just two minutes remaining in the half however, Bromham received the lifeline they required when Freddie Paget’s cross was deflected off Allan Clarke and looped over a stranded Rich Hunt in the Horse goal to nestle in the net.

The goal had an instant impact and Bromham found a sense of belief that had previously been missing, suddenly looking like they could score with every attack.

A minute after his goal Freddie Paget sent a header on to the crossbar and before the half was over Hunt was forced into a fantastic double save, the first from Danny Powell’s rasping long-range effort.

It was Powell’s last meaningful contribution of the game as the influential midfielder was helped from the field in the first minute of the second half with what appeared a serious leg injury.

With their inspirational leader off the field Bromham would have been forgiven for wilting, but his withdrawal seemed to have an inspirational effect instead as they battled for everything with even more gusto and gave the visitors less and less time on the ball.

The home side finally got their reward for their efforts in the 71st minute when another long ball was raced on to by Sam Paget, who finished tidily from the edge of the penalty area as Hunt rushed out to narrow the angle.

With a nervy 19 minutes remaining both sides would probably have taken the point, but, and with all credit to them, both gambled in search of the elusive win.

With normal time up Jim Sandiford got his head on Freddie Paget’s cross and found the back of the net to send the home side into raptures, and pack White Horse back off to Westbury with nothing from what seemed a formality of three points just an hour earlier.

Kings Arms (All Cannings) 1 North Star A 1

DESPITE taking a half time lead at home to North Star A, Jim Wilson’s Kings Arms (All Cannings) side had to settle for a share of the spoils at Liam Westland’s side fought back to level in the second period and claim a 1-1 draw.

Myles Hickton scored on his league debut to give Kings Arms the lead but his effort was cancelled out midway through the second half when Paul Green netted the Star’s equaliser.

Prestige Bodyworks 5 Chippenham West End 1

LOCAL rivals Prestige Bodyworks and Chippenham West End met at Stanley Park and after a goalless first half the floodgates opened and despite falling behind Prestige put on a brilliant display as they were relentless as they fought back to claim an emphatic 5-1 triumph.

Dave Byatt latched onto an inch-perfect through ball to give West End the lead early in the second half, but after that it was one-way traffic as Prestige ran riot.

Dave Nolan helped himself to a three timer with Ryan Peck and Jamie Treweke scoring one each to put the icing on what was a five-star performance by the winners.

Somerford 3 Goatacre CC 1

Somerford FC, who battered Goatacre CC 7-0 on the way to the cricketers winning the Division Two title last season, were expected to be on the receiving end of a Goatacre backlash.

But once again Somerford showed what they are capable of doing as they kicked off the season with a 3-1 win.

Chris Yeo so many times the match winner for Somerford was again the star of the show scoring all three goals for Spike Chandler’s side, his first two coming in the first half.

Harry Warner kept Goatacre in the game when he reduced the arrears early in the second period, but Somerford held firm at the back until they broke away in the 90th minute to set Yeo free as as the striker kept his cool he slotted home his third of the game to give Chandler’s side their second straight win over Sam Parish side.

Staverton 3 Corsham CC Wildcats 0

STILL suffering from their failure to clinch an automatic promotion spot last term Staverton put down an early marker to their intentions for the challenge ahead with a 3-0 success at home Corsham CC Wildcats (formerly Biddestone White Horse).

Last season's top scorer Jason Povey gave Staverton a slender lead at the break, but it was the introduction of Scott Askew that proved to be the key move from the villagers’ manager Aaron Latchem.

Askew doubled Staverton’s lead with delightful chip and a second from the debutant sealed the points for Latchem’s side.
