CHIPPENHAM TOWN: Winter aiming to beef up squad options
STEVE Winter says Chippenham Town are in need of ‘two or three’ more players to bolster their squad.
Utility man Toby Osman completed his move to Bridgwater Town last week but full-back Stuart Tovey made his Bluebirds debut in Sunday’s loss at Cambridge City after making the switch from Paulton Rovers.
Chippenham were unsuccessful in their bid to sign Clevedon Town defender Sam Teale and caretaker chief Winter says that he’s still working on potential new recruits.
“At the moment, we’ve been fitting a lot of square pegs in round holes and I think that we need another two or three players to have a really good squad - I’m working on that but I won’t be saying any names at the moment,” said Winter.
“Sam decided to stay where he was, which was a shock to me but we’ve got to respect his decision. But Stuart is the kind of player who will give 100 per cent for us and I think he’ll be a good signing.”
On Sunday, Chippenham fell behind in the ninth minute as Cambridge’s Adam Marriott turned home James Britghton’s cross from the left-wing.
But the Bluebirds hit back late in the first period as James Guthrie’s call into the box outfoxed everyone and looped over the head of City keeper Zac Barrett and into the net.
But the hosts’ Nick Beasant netted Cambridge’s winner with seven minutes to go, slotting home after he was played in by Ieuan Lewis.
Winter added: “It was definitely another tough place to go and to be fair to Cambridge, they were a good side and they played some good football on the day.
“We didn’t play too badly and we had a few opportunities to get another goal but I think that we just came up against them at the wrong time.
