CHIPPENHAM & DISTRICT SUNDAY LEAGUE DIVISION THREE: Third time lucky for Pig & Whistle
5:00pm Monday 16th September 2013 in Sport
MELKSHAM side Pig & Whistle United bounced back after suffering heavy losses in their opening two Division Three matches.
Richard Allen’s side showed their battling qualities as the recovered from defeats against Wren and North Star B to claim a 5-2 win at Old Road FC who are finding it hard to come to terms with life in the division after finishing as fourth division runners up last term.
Rob O’Harrow gave Pig & Whistle the start they would have been looking for, however their joy was shortlived as Scott Austin netted to bring Old Road level.
Sean Meer reclaimed the lead for the Pig but once again Old Road were able to conjure up an equaliser, Dan Stevens finding the target to make it 2-2.
After the break, Meer again handed the initiative back to the Pig and when he completed his hat-trick the points were all but secured this was confirmed by Chris Bishop who completed the scoring with his first goal for the club.
Worton & Cheverell (Sunday) 3 FC North Wiltshire 2
WORTON & Cheverell (Sunday) maintained their fine start to the season with a 3-2 home success over FC North Wiltshire, who had won a classic encounter between the side last December 6-5.
Although this game produced another goal fest it was again played in the true spirit of football and was well refereed by Melvin Sullivan.
North Wilts flew out the blocks and stunned both the home team and the supporters by taking the lead on 25 seconds when Matt Parsons fired home.
However parity was restored when Declan Blandford scored from the penalty spot for a hand ball and with neither side able to add a second before half time the teams went in locked at one-each.
With the wind behind them Worton saw a number of chances go begging before a superb volley from 35 yards saw them take the lead with Nick Waring the player being the quickest off the mark when he latched onto a weak clearance to thump the ball back over the stranded North Wilts keeper.
Within a minute and straight from the restart North Wilts were all square, Dan Deacon scoring to make it 2-2.
The game ebbed and flowed with chances falling to both sides before Kyle Davies, who again was proving to be a handful for the defence, took the ball down the right side and knocked the ball beyond the keeper's reach to Declan Blandford to score his second and Worton’s third with only a couple of minutes remaining.
Wren FC 0 Melksham Cosmos 5
A VERY understrength Wren FC side did really well to keep the score down at home to table toppers Melksham Cosmos who would have arrived at Beverbrook looking to add further misery on Matt Fenn’s side, who were beaten 11-0 in their previous game.
Dan Griffiths, Jason Hull and two Joe Griffiths goals gave Cosmos a 4-0 half-time lead. After the break a second from Jason Hull completed the win.
