RUGBY: Newton Abbot 29 Chippenham 15
4:00pm Tuesday 17th September 2013 in Sport
CHIPPENHAM conceded three converted tries in the final 25 minutes to slip to defeat in Cornwall.
The visitors made a bright start led by Jon Squire, back in club colours for the first time in two years.
However, Abbot kicked a penalty, then added a try for an 8-0 lead before Chippenham lost prop James Down to injury.
Charlie Newman, making his first start of the season, made an impact, scoring a try on 26 minutes that Sam Saunders converted to leave Chippenham trailing 8-5 at the interval.
The visitors were first out of the blocks in the second half, Saunders slotting a penalty, then converting a well-taken try by Gary Champion.
However, Abbot hit their stride, scoring 21 unanswered points and, despite being camped on the line for the last six minutes, Chippenham could not get back into bonus-point territory and finished empty-handed, despite an oustanding performance in the back row from Tom Knight.
