RUGBY: Trowbridge’s big day looms
TROWBRIDGE head coach Steve Ojomoh has urged his squad to “play the match, not the occasion’’ ahead of the first game at their new home tomorrow.
Ojomoh’s men host North Dorset (3pm) as the club’s new multi-million pound facilities are opened up for senior matchday use for the first time.
Trowbridge found league new boys Wells too tough to handle on the opening day of the season, a defeat former Bath and England man Ojomoh attributed to a lack of testing match practice.
“Everybody is looking forward to the match because it’s a big day for the club,’’ he said. “But for me and my squad it’s important we focus on the match.
“It’s going to be a fabulous day for the club. We had our first training session up there on Tuesday and got such a good feel from the place.’’ Wells, level transferred across from the Western Counties, secured a bonus-point win as tries from Jake Dampier, Jamie Payne, and a brace from John Branch wrapped up victory.
Alex Cooke added four conversions, with a penalty from Lloyd Davis and a try at the end from Ashley Chalk the Trowbridge replies.
Ojomoh added: “I had absolutely no complaints about the result, but I’m more concerned with our preparation.
“What it told me was that we hadn’t had meaningful pre-season matches.
“You can train all you want but there is no substitute for a match situation and we really needed to up the physicality and intensity.’’
The first-ever match at the new headquarters of Trowbridge Rugby Club brought a home win on Sunday.
The club’s U15s celebrated the move to the new facilities at Hilperton with an emphatic 51-0 victory against their Corsham counterparts.
The home side ran in nine tries to two, George Gerrish, having the honour of the first try at the ground.
Jamie Howell and Dean Goddard scored two apiece and there were touchdowns for Tom Coller, Marco Lopez, David Phillips and Bradley Jones. Sam Gibbons added three conversions.
