CHIPPENHAM TOWN: Hinckley demise a lesson for Bluebirds’ chairman
BLUEBIRDS’ chairman Neil Blackmore insists that his club must continue to avoid the temptation of living beyond their means or risk the same fate as Hinckley United.
Chippenham Town will not be taking on Hinckley in the Calor League Premier Division this season after the Leicestershire outfit were wound up by the High Court on Monday for reported debts of over £200,000.
Blackmore says that boards must not crumble under the pressure to produce on the pitch and warned that keeping a lid on player wages is vital to safeguarding a club’s future.
“It’s very scary and I believe that clubs need to balance the books and be run like a business,” said the Chippenham chairman.
“When you’re under pressure, it’s very easy to start going over your budget.
“Some of the wages that the bigger clubs in this league pay out are just stupid amounts of money and you have to make sure that you have a wage bill that’s manageable. I review our budget after every game and we’ll continue to do that.”
Blackmore revealed that the Bluebirds are still on the hunt for reinforcements to their squad, with a defender topping their list of transfer targets.
He said: “We know that we need a few key players to add the squad and nobody is working harder than Steve (Winter) to make that happen.
“I think that our absolute priority is a central defender and we need to maybe even try to get one in before this weekend if we can. But it really isn’t a time of the season when players want to move at the moment.”
- Chippenham will play Chertsey Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy on October 19 after the Calor League Division One Central outfit beat Guildford City 4-3 in the preliminary round last weekend.
The Bluebirds’ home clash with Truro City on Tuesday, October 22, has been postponed due to Truro’s Red Insure Cup commitments.
