CLARRIE Dunbar completed a fine double last weekend in national inter-club competitions with emphatic victories over west country sides Victoria (Weston-super-Mare) and Bristol, writes DAVE EATON.

They trounced Victoria by 51 shots running out 111-60 victors in their men’s second round Denny Cup tie.

Then 24 hours later, the mixed team thumped arch-rivals Bristol in the Top Club competition 14 -2.

Clarrie’s Denny Cup success was built on comprehensive home victories recorded by Andrew Colebrooke’s rink, who won by 34 shots, and Neil Collett’s quartet, who won by a margin of 27.

As Victoria only have one green a third home rink was played at Clarrie which saw Craig Doughty’s four win by four shots.

Despite the big overall win Dunbar did not whitewash their Somerset opponents as Keith Bailey’s quartet went down by 14 shots at Victoria.

Dunbar now face Bristol in round three on November 30.

Dunbar took the honours in four of the five disciplines to easily out gun Bristol in the third round of the knockout Top Club competition.

A clean sweep was denied them when Bristol’s Sue Osborne beat Kathy Walker in the two wood singles but Keith Bailey won the men’s singles.

There were healthy wins in the mixed fours skipped by Neil Collett and mixed triples, skipped by Russell Francis. But the mixed pairs was a closer affair as Kim Smith and Andy Colebrooke only won by five shots.

Clarrie advance to the Top Club last 16 and will face Desborough (Maidenhead), a strong mixed club who have won the Egham Trophy, mixed inter-club championship for the past three seasons.

ANOTHER busy weekend lies in store for Clarrie Dunbar men as they compete in the Wessex League on Sunday while 10 of their players compete for Somerset in the inter-county championship tomorrow.

Clarrie’s Keith Bailey, Andy Colebrooke, Craig Doughty, Russell Francis, Terry Perkins and Graham Shadwell all played for Somerset last season in the Liberty Trophy, inter-county championship.

However, Andrew Taylor, Dale Taylor, John Freeman and Neil Collett will all be making their debuts tomorrow (10am) when Somerset host Dorset at Taunton Deane Indoor Bowls Club in a first round tie.

On Sunday morning, the two heavyweights in the central region of the Wessex League Clarrie Dunbar and Bristol clash in the second set matches in the 2013-14 campaign.

Bristol won the central section last year and beat Clarrie on their way to topping the table by a single point.

However, Dunbar gained revenge when comfortable beating Bristol in the play-offs final in March to secure the overall Wessex League crown.

CHRISTIE MILLER men bowed out in the second round of the Denny Cup last weekend when beaten heavily losing to Malvern Hills 98-37.

The Worcestershire side are one of the top men’s indoor clubs in the midlands and west regions and in fact won the overall Wessex League title when victorious in the 2012 play-offs final.

Christie lost heavily on three rinks with only Brian Routledge’s home four going close only losing by three shots.

Sunday’s fixtures: Bristol v Clarrie Dunbar; Purnell V North Wilts; Nailsea v Christie Miller.

FOUR players from Christie Miller – Chris Easton, Nigel Price, Paul Macdonald and Andy Moore – are all named in the Wiltshire men’s side to play in Saturday’s Liberty Trophy.

The quartet will form a rink for the first round inter-county championship tie when Wiltshire face Gloucestershire at MidGlos (10am) Dale Hayward from the Melksham club is named as one of the two reserves.

Meanwhile four ladies who are members of Christie Miller Moonrakers (women’s section) made their Wiltshire Women’s debuts last Sunday in the Atherley Trophy.

It was not a debut to be remembered by the quartet, who were only eligible to play this season after the Melksham club joined the county ladies bowling association .

WILTSHIRE ladies fell at the first hurdle in the inter-county championship when crashing to a heavy 55 shot defeat at the hands of Oxfordshire.

They made a reasonable start to the away first round Atherley Trophy tie at Oxford City and County Indoor Bowls Club and were only 35-27 down across the board at five ends.

But the match was finished as a contest in the next five as Wiltshire women only scored 12 more shots but conceded a massive 53 to trail 88-39 at halfway (ten ends) and eventually lost on all six rinks.
