TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION TWO: Kennedy goal earns Heytesbury shock win

ON A day of surprise results in Division Two, villagers Heytesbury claimed probably the biggest one with a 1-0 victory at home to Dave Jenkins' promotion hopefuls Trowbridge Town Reserves who had beaten their hosts 4-0 way back in early September.

After a goalless first half the deadlock was broken by Leigh Kennedy whose well-taken lob on 65 minutes was enough to earn Heytesbury their win.

Bradford United Reserves 0 Lacock FC 5

A 5-0 VICTORY for leaders Lacock at Bradford United Reserves saw Joe Martin and Martin Bradfield’s side stretch their unbeaten run to 11 matches and, at what is the halfway stage of the season for many teams, it is growing harder week by week to see anyone being able to derail the villagers in their quest for the title.

Bradford started their latest game with just 10 players and were reduced to nine after an injury to Danny Harrision who later came back on and hobbled around to help his teams cause. By half time Bradford were up to full strength but 2-0 down to goals from Mike Wilkins and Dan Young.

The second half saw Bradford loss Harrision as his injury became to bad for his to carry on, but they continued to give it their all as they kept theit much superior guests at bay and restricted them to three more goals, Tom Lye on his debut, Jake Marshall and Adam Shipman making up Lacock’s five.

Trowbridge Wanderers 3 Westbury Town 6

WESTBURY Town were another team who pulled off a shock result as they beat Matt Rusling’s promotion chasing Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves side 6-3 away from their own base at Bratton and should set the teams up nicely for the return fixture scheduled for next weekend.

Tristan Buckland gave Westbury the lead when he headed home a Jordan Cain free kick. Wanderers restored parity through a Steve Jackson penalty after Will Bayley had been brought down. Wanderers were then caught out not once, but twice by Levi Wood whose two breakaway goal put Westbury 3-1 up at half time.

Levi Wood completed his hat-trick before Mike Riston’s free kick gave Wanderers hope of getting back into the game, however it wasn’t to be as a fourth of the afternoon from Wood and a long-range thunderbolt from Jordan Cain made it 6-2 to Westbury before Nathan Olasz scored a brilliant 30 yard effort at the end to claim the losers third of an incredible game.

Worton & Cheverell 9 Westwood News 1

WESTWOOD News were undoubtedly the biggest winners on an afternoon that saw Mark Hurkett’s side move into second place following their own 9-1 win at Worton & Cheverell that was coupled with shock defeats for both Trowbridge Town Reserves and Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves, who had both started the afternoon above the newsmen in the standings.

For the opening quarter of the game at The Lye, Worton matched their guests but once Josh Maguire put Westwood ahead on 21 minutes the hosts who fielded many of their former youth players fell apart.

Mark Maguire made it 2-0 on 27 minutes and it was game over just before the interval thanks to a second of the match for Josh Maguire.

Any fight that Worton may have had left in them all but vanished in the 51st minute when Josh Maguire bagged his third of the game which was quickly followed by a second from his brother Mark on 58 minutes. Josh Maguire took his tally to four and Westwood’s to six a few minutes later.

What was quickly becoming the Maguire double act was ended on 67 minutes when Ashley Styles got his name on the score sheet.

Steve Bryant turned in disgust as his over his cross looked to be sailing over the bar so he missed out when the ball dropped into the net for 8-0 and when Lee Stevens headed home number nine on 84 minutes the rout was completed.

However the last goal of the game went to Worton’s Ben Mason who struck his side's consolation five minutes from time.
