CHIPPENHAM & DISTRICT SUNDAY LEAGUE KNOCKOUT CUP: Holders see off battling Staverton

LAST season’s presstoprint-sponsored Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup winners Biddestone Social kept their hopes of retaining the trophy then won in April by beating Bug & Spider 4-2 very much alive with a harder than expected 3-1 win at first division Staverton.

Biddestone, who will face Goatacre next weekend, opened the scoring through Nick Ridout. Martin Johnson doubled the cup holders lead prior to half time and although Sam Clark halved the deficit for Staverton early in the second period a second from Nick Ridout sealed victory for Biddestone.

Corsham Centre Youth 3 Kings Arms (All Cannings) 1

CORSHAM Centre Youth fresh from their stunning Sunday Cup success over New Century WMC were made to work for their place in the quarter-final line-up, the fourth division leaders finally overcoming first division Kings Arms (All Cannings) 3-1 to become the first side to make it into the final eight.

Centre had the greater percentage of the ball but good goalkeeping and two goal line clearances from James Lye efforts kept the score level until Darrin Moss converted a Sam Hodsoll cross to open the scoring on 30 minutes.

The remainder of the first half saw both teams cancel each other out with the Centre midfield pairing of Adam Shipman and Adrian Webb working tirelessly.

Kings Arms equalised on 60 minutes with Andy Hunt scoring against the run of play. Centre picked up the pace of the game and another James Lye shot hit the woodwork.

On 70 minutes Lye smashed a free kick from fully 35 yards that thundered into the net for 2-1. The tempo was increased even further and Centre were rewarded as Mark Sharratt went through a number of tackles to thump home number three.

Centre’s new signing Andy Wilkins had an impressive debut whilst referee Luke Rudman had an excellent game in the middle.
