THE all-Premier Division affair in the second round of this seasons presstoprint-sponsored Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup between AFC Melksham and The Castle FC went the way of the latter.

But Tom Perkins' Devizes-based side had to go the full distance before ending Melksham’s cup hopes with a 4-3 penalty shootout success after 120 minutes failed to find a winner.

Castle took the lead midway through the first half. Melksham’s Eathan Cox fouled Jonny Emm and from the resulting free kick, Rob Mitchell drove home through a crowded goal mouth to hand Perkins side the lead.

Melksham’s keeper Nick Dibden kept them in the tie as he denied Jack Fisher and then Gary Campbell with two excellent saves. At the other end Castle’s keeper Matt Tilley was called into action on numerous occasions to preserve his teams slender lead which they took in the interval.

The second period was bossed by Melksham and again it was keeper Tilley who was proving to be a thorn in their side as he repelled everything the hosts threw at him.

But on 72 minutes he was finally beaten, when Sean Fordham beat two players before firing home from distance to bring the scores level and take the game to extra time.

With neither team being able to find a winner in the extra 30 minutes it came down to the dreaded penalty shoot out and with Melksham’s record in penalty shootouts similar to that of England’s the smart money was on Castle.

But after five penalties each with ended 3-3 with both keepers producing saves to keep the game alive it went to sudden death and Melksham Bradley Partner had his spot kick brilliantly saved by keeper Tilley before Rob Mitchell stepped up to convert the winning penalty for the Castle.

Goatacre CC FC 1 Biddestone Social 4

CUP holders Biddestone Social who have lifted the trophy in three of the last four season remain on course to do it for a fourth time after overcoming a potential banana-skin in first division Goatacre CC FC who they beat 4-1 to book their place in the last eight.

Martin Johnson scored Social’s first goal with a precision finish with a 25 yard strike which was too good for the Goatacre keeper. Darren Holcombe scored for the home side to take the sides into the break locked together at one-apiece.

Veteran and Social hero Micky Baggs who Goatacre thought was lucky to remain on the pitch scored a tidy finish across the keeper after good work by Aaron Tinson to put Ashley Smith’s side 2-1 up. Nick Ridout broke clear and drilled the ball across to Tinson who rifled home from close range for 3-1.

Social’s fourth was created by the individual brilliance of flying full back Justin Phillimore who after breaking down the left hand side picked out Ridout, who had the easiest of finishes to knock in the final goal of the game and seal Social’s 4-1 success.

Prestige Bodyworks 4 Potterne CFC 2

WHAT was predicted to be a David versus Goliath battle between first division leaders Prestige Bodyworks and second division strugglers Potterne CFC was anything, but Prestige had to work for their quarter-final spot before seeing off a spirited challenge from Potterne who eventually crashed out losing 4-2.

Adam O’Keeffe and Rob Finnamore put Prestige two-up before their advantage was halved by Ben House whose penalty gave Potterne a glimmer of hope that soon disappeared when Stuart Field netted to hand Prestige their two-goal cushion.

Dave Nolan extended the Prestige lead even further, but Potterne never gave up and pulled a goal back courtesy of Ashley Huntley who struck a 30 yards scorcher for the villagers but it was only a consolation as Prestige held out for a harder than expected win.

Somerford FC 5 FC Buscots 5 (AET, Buscots won 5-4 on pens)

WHAT was billed as probably the tie of the round between first division Somerford FC and second division FC Buscots lived up to expectations as Buscots booked their place in the quarter-final line up winning a penalty shoot out 5-4 after the previous 120 minutes produced 10 goals but no winner.

Matt Spear scored a double for Somerford in a first half that saw Rob Drown reply for Buscots. Ashley Monaghan and Gavin Klukowski put Somerford 4-1 before Buscots who were down to 10 men following the dismissal of Andrew Webster in his first game for two years fought back to level with goals from Adam Bewley and Phil Little who scored twice after earlier missing a penalty.

Castle, who had been behind for most of the game, took the lead in the first half of extra time, but the 10 men were unable to hold on as Matt Holdaway scored for Somerford to take the tie to penalties.

Adam Bewley, Phil Little, Rob Drown and Charlie Collier all keeping the nerve to score from the spot to take Buscots through.

Sutton Benger 0 Bradford Renegades 6

THINGS went to form at Stanley Park where premier division Bradford Renegades followed the script perfectly to defeat second division Sutton Benger 6-0 and book their place the last eight of the competition where they were beaten semi-finalists last term.

The game was over as a contest midway through the first half after a quick-fire hat trick from Mark Robinson put Renegades 3-0 ahead, his second being a delightful dink over the Benger keeper. Josh Maguire after being set up by Tom Rooney added a fourth before half time.

The second period saw Rooney get on the score sheet himself with a deflected drive from the edge of the area and the goal of the game made up Renegades half dozen; Josh Ferguson on his debut for Renegades made up Renegades half dozen in a game that manager Dan Mercer who took over from Lance Davis, won’t forget for a very long time.

Westbury Rangers 2 Bromham 1

AN INSPIRED substitution from Westbury Rangers manager Shaun Gardiner that saw him throw on Rob Youens with 20 minutes remaining in their cup time at Bromham, proved to be decisive as Youens proved to be the game changer who helped Westbury come from behind to beat their first division opponents 2-1.

Top flight Westbury who are bidding to win the cup for the first time in their 40 year history looked to be heading out of the competition as they looked to have no answer to Freddie Paget’s first-half goal for Bromham.

A final throw of the dice from Gardiner saw him introduce Youens and it was from his corner that Nathan Hallett netted Westbury’s equaliser.

With four minutes left on the clock and with the game heading for extra-time Youens set up Shane Newman who conjured up a winner for Westbury to keep their dreams of cup success alive.
