RUGBY: Westbury 10 Warminster 21

WARMINSTER finally ended their Westbury jinx as they gained revenge for a one-point defeat earlier in the season.

The visitors welcomed back centre Rob Bell after a couple of months away on work duties and it was his hat-trick of tries that proved the difference between the two sides.

Warminster were against a crosswind in the first half but largely dominated territory, although it was Westbury who went ahead when Simon Higgins landed a long-range penalty after a late tackle.

The home side went further ahead as Warminster scrum-half Jason Sprangle overran winger Craig Buckton’s pass and Jack Brooks pounced for the home side and ran the length of the field to score under the posts,, Higgins adding the conversion.

Warminster’s response was immediate and similar to the score they had just conceded.

Bell pounced on a loose ball, but over-balanced and fell, before picking himself up and charging over under the posts, Sprangle adding the conversion.

Westbury, who had the upper hand in the set piece, turned around for the second half in front, but Warminster again pinend them back around their own 22.

With the wind causing problems for Warminster hooker Dan Woods, several lineouts went astray before Bell again crashed over from a typically strong run in midfield.

Sprangle again added the extras and, with just over 10 minutes to go Westbury were reduced to 14 men by a sin-binning after a string of team offences.

Warminster took advantage with Bell’s hat-trick score, in which he sprinted clear after his side had stolen possession and a scissors move in midfield.

Sprangle added the conversion to confirm victory.

WARMINSTER 2nd claimed a 28-24 win over Melksham 3rd in Dorset & Wilts Three North.

Tries came from centre Dai Frowen twice, Dex Hamilton and back row Mike Kelso scored tries, fly-half Lewis Noble converted all four.
