WITH the torrential rain of the previous 48 hours leading to the postponement of all but three matches from the S.K. Fruits Ltd Chippenham & District Sunday League everything remains as it was in both the Premier and fourth divisions after they were both wiped out.

In Division One, Staverton kept their promotion hopes alive, but they were made to grind out a 4-2 victory at home to basement side Chippenham West End to claim the points that move them into third spot behind leaders Prestige Bodyworks and Bromham.

Two draws against West End last term was enough to see Aaron Latchem’s side miss out on an automatic promotion spot, so the villagers were desperate to avoid what was seen as a possible banana-skin to their hopes of reaching the top flight.

Staverton started well and were two up up thanks to goals from Simon Parfitt and Matty Hall for whom it was his first of the season.

West End were down but not out and they were given a lifeline as Paul Mannings buried home a bullet header to take his team into the break trailing by the odd goal.

The second half began with Staverton in the ascendancy and they took a 3-1 lead through Zach Manna who found the target for the first time since returning to the club after a brief spell with Southwick Wanderers.

Back came West End and they set up a fantastic finale when Lee Coleman struck his first goal for the team to cut the deficit to the odd goal.

On a day of firsts it was Staverton’s debutant Fosu Gharban who grabbed the headlines.

Gharban, playing in his first Sunday League game for a while, came off the bench to score his first league goal since October 2010, what proved to be the all-important fourth that wrapped up victory for Latchem’s side.
