CLARRIE Dunbar bowler Kim Smith missed out on recording a treble in national indoor championship events last week, writes DAVE EATON.

The Clarrie Dunbar bowler triumphed in mixed competitions but missed out in the ladies national fours.

Together with Andrew Colebrooke she won the Area 30 final in the mixed pairs against the North Wilts duo Sue Cooke and Wayne Snook.

They led 19-5 at one stage but it turned out to be a very close and nail-biting match as they were pegged back to 23-23 going into the 21st and last end. And it needed Colebrooke to draw shot with his last wood to snatch a last gasp 24-23 victory.

Smith and Colebrooke progress to the inter-area final and a match against the Area 29 champions who are from either Taunton Deane or Victoria (Weston-super-Mare) - just one step away from the final stages in Lincoln at the end of next month.

However, there was no repeat for Smith in the mixed fours Area 30 final against North Wilts despite once again flying into a big early lead.

This time the quartet of Debbie Shadwell, Smith, Andy Colebrooke and Russell Francis did not surrender their advantage after going 9-0 up.

North Wilts then pulled a shot back but a five on the 13th end put Clarrie 24-2 up and the visiting North Wilts four of Steve Snook, John Lucas (sub for Wayne Snook), Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs conceded.

Smith’s mixed four from Clarrie move forward to the inter-area final and will face either Watchet or Taunton Deane for a place at Lincoln.

But Smith failed to complete a hat-trick as her quartet of Anne Jones, Debbie Shadwell, Jeanette Wheeler and herself lost 20-14 in the Area 30 semi-finals in the national fours championships to the North Wilts foursome of Val Molton, Janet Hardie, Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs.

This means Clarrie have no more interest in any ladies national events.

However, it is a different story in the men’s national championships as they are still running in no fewer than six men’s competitions.

Craig Doughty and Graham Shadwell have to meet Brian Hawkins and Keith Bailey in the Area 30 semi-finals of the pairs.

Meanwhile the trio of Russell Milne, Dave Pitcher and Fred Pope are away in the area triples semi-finals to Mike Humphries (Bristol).

The fours draw has resulted in another all-Clarrie affair in the semi-finals with Dick Discombe, Mike Sawyers, Alan Colebrooke and Graham Shadwell facing John Freeman, Keith Bailey, Andy Colebrooke and Russell Francis.

Alan Colebrooke has to travel away to Clevedon to play former England international Pip Branfield in the O60 singles area semi-finals.

And Colebrooke has to travel to Nailsea along with Dick Discombe and Mike Sawyers to face Martin Thorne in the Area 30 final in the Over 50 triples competition.

Finally, Keith Haines’ foursome are through to the Area 30 final in the 060 fours championship. The quartet of Haines, Peter Hooley, John Jones and Alan Colebrooke are drawn against Michael Pratt’s foursome from Purnell (Paulton).
